Resumen en lenguaje sencillo

School board hears how Portland Public Schools will judge school closure and merger options

Staff explained how they will measure options for "rightsizing," which means changing which schools exist, their sizes and boundaries because many schools are under-enrolled. They showed the measures they will use, like school size, distance from home and which schools feed into which, plus an equity review for every option. Staff said that for eight years, money has been taken from high schools to support under-enrolled elementary, K-8 and middle schools.

Decision: No vote: this was an update to the board. Staff said no decision was requested.
Who it affects: Students, families and staff across Portland Public Schools, especially those in small schools or in schools that send students to more than one next-level school.
Next: Community sessions at Faubion PK-8 on September 19 at 11 a.m. and Ida B. Wells High School on September 30 at 6 p.m. Options will be released in October with more feedback events. The superintendent will recommend a plan and the board is set to vote in November or December 2026, with changes starting in the 2027 school year.

September 15, 2026 Board Meeting Decision Framework Build shared understanding of how PPS is moving from guiding principles to analysis. Today we will: a. Show how the Guiding Principles translate into measurable KPIs b. Introduce the Equity Impact Analysis and how it complements the KPI analysis c. Explain how these tools will be used to develop, evaluate, and refine scenarios Purpose Today’s Discussion Questions and feedback on the approach before scenario review begins. ● What questions do you have about how the analysis works? ● Does the approach provide sufficient information to understand potential impacts and trade-offs? ● What should staff keep in mind as we apply this framework to scenarios? No decision is requested today. Well-Resourced Schools Sustainable, well-resourced schools that provide consistent access to strong academic programming across PPS. Safe and Healthy Learning Environments Aligning school facilities and learning environments to support student safety, wellness, and long-term sustainability. Educational Options Maintaining a strong network of neighborhood schools (while providing a balance of educational options) that are sustainable and well-resourced. PPS Equity Lens Using the PPS Equity Lens to guide decision-making and center students most impacted by inequities. Shaping the Work Approved Guiding Principles Work Plan Engagement Broader Community ● multiple phases ● share plan + dates ● families + educators ● variety of perspectives ● linguistically + culturally specific Analysis Comprehensive Approach ● multiple data points ● district-wide ● state sources ● operational feasibility ● equity impact Implementation Operationalize Framework ● coordinate + sequence ● timeline + decisions ● monitor + evaluate + adjust ● Board approval Equity Impact AnalysisRightsizing 6 Equity is Part of the Analysis - not a Final Check 7 Stage Equity checkpoint What it produces Workgroups and Criteria Who benefits, who carries burden, and what could our criteria miss?
