Metro approves plan for updating the region's long-range transportation plan

The Regional Transportation Plan is the Portland area's long-range plan for roads, transit, biking and walking, and it decides which projects can use federal money. This work plan sets the steps, schedule and public input for updating it by November 30, 2028, when the current plan expires under federal law. It includes a call for project ideas in early 2027 and a 45-day public comment period in early 2028.

Decision: Passed, 6 to 0, with one councilor excused.
Who it affects: People who travel in the urban parts of Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties, since the plan guides which transportation projects get funded.
Next: Cities, counties and agencies can submit projects from Jan. 15 to Mar. 26, 2027. Public comment on the draft plan runs Jan. 14 to Feb. 29, 2028. The Metro Council will consider final adoption between July and November 2028.
